Gelbooru scores 5/10 on our safety review as of March 2026. That score is a real caution flag for a site with significant traffic - Gelbooru is one of the larger imageboard sites for anime and hentai content, but its safety profile is held back by weak age verification, aggressive ad behavior in certain browsing states, and a privacy policy that's minimal to the point of being nearly informationless. The site isn't a scam, but it's not one we'd recommend without active browser protection in place.

Here's what we found during testing. Gelbooru runs HTTPS with a valid certificate. Age verification is functionally absent for tag-based browsing of explicit content - the site uses a content rating system (safe/questionable/explicit) but accessing explicit content requires minimal confirmation. The privacy policy is thin - it covers cookie use and basic analytics but doesn't address data retention, third-party processor names, or deletion procedures. Ad behavior during our March 2026 testing included pop-under events and multiple redirect-capable banner implementations, which put Gelbooru in the same risk tier as AnyShemale and BoyFriendTV on our ad-behavior scoring. We did not confirm malware delivery, but the ad infrastructure creates the conditions for it. Google Safe Browsing showed no active flags. Gelbooru runs without account creation requirements for browsing, which limits data collection exposure somewhat.
