How Janitor AI Pricing Works: Free vs Paid Plans Explained
Updated April 23, 2026
This guide shows you how to how janitor ai pricing works: free vs paid plans explained. Covers Janitor AI specifically. Last updated April 23, 2026.
Janitor AI's pricing model is genuinely different from most AI companions - and once you understand the API key approach, it's actually one of the more flexible options out there. Here's how it breaks down.
## The Free Tier
You can use Janitor AI free with their built-in model, but the free tier is rate-limited. You'll hit message caps within a fairly short session, and free users are often queued during peak hours. The characters and roleplay features are fully available - you're just limited on volume.
## Bring Your Own API Key (BYOK)
This is what makes Janitor AI different. You can connect your own OpenAI or Claude API key, and your conversations route through that key at your cost. This lets you use GPT-4 or Claude quality models for as long as your API credits last. The pricing depends entirely on whichever provider you use - roughly $0.01-0.03 per 1K tokens with most models.
To set this up: go to Settings, select API Configuration, paste your key, and choose your preferred model. Janitor AI doesn't charge anything extra when you use BYOK - you only pay the underlying API cost.
## Janitor AI Premium
Premium removes rate limits on Janitor's own hosted model and reduces queue times significantly. It doesn't give you unlimited API calls - that's still pay-per-use through your own key. Premium is worth it if you want quick access to the platform without managing API billing.
## Which Option Makes Sense
- Casual use with simple characters: free tier is fine
- Heavy use with the best models: get an OpenAI API key and use BYOK
- Frequent use without API management hassle: premium subscription
Most heavy users end up combining premium with their own API key for the best experience.
