AI-generated synthetic media that convincingly replaces a person's likeness in photos or videos, often used without consent in adult content.
Deepfakes are synthetic media created using artificial intelligence, specifically deep learning neural networks, to superimpose one person's face or body onto another's in photos or videos. The technology produces increasingly realistic results that can be difficult to distinguish from authentic media. While deepfakes have legitimate applications in film production and entertainment, their most controversial use is in non-consensual adult content.
The vast majority of deepfake content online is pornographic in nature. Studies have found that over 90 percent of deepfake videos involve placing women's faces onto pornographic material without their knowledge or consent. Celebrities, public figures, and increasingly ordinary individuals have been targeted. This has raised serious ethical and legal concerns about consent, harassment, and the weaponization of synthetic media.
The technology behind deepfakes relies on generative adversarial networks (GANs) and autoencoders trained on large datasets of facial images. As these AI tools become more accessible and produce higher quality output, the barrier to creating convincing deepfakes continues to drop. Free and open-source tools have made the technology available to virtually anyone with a computer.
Legislation around deepfakes is evolving rapidly. Several jurisdictions have enacted or proposed laws specifically targeting non-consensual deepfake pornography, treating it similarly to revenge porn. Major platforms including Pornhub, Reddit, and Twitter have policies banning non-consensual deepfake content. Detection tools are being developed alongside the generation technology, using AI to identify telltale artifacts in synthetic media. However, the arms race between creation and detection continues, making this one of the most pressing ethical challenges in digital media.
